Wilderness Time

Stephanie Spellers, Dwight Zscheile and special guests have been hosting a limited digital series that combines Zoom webinar, Facebook Live chat, and podcast to engage the big questions churches are facing right now.

Session 6: Worship Beyond the Building

Webinar: July 14 | FB Live: July 16 | Podcast: July 23

We don’t know how to truly value worship outside of consecrated buildings, especially when it’s online. How might we experience digital and distributed church as real worship?

Liturgical and sacramental traditions find the pandemic particularly challenging when it comes to worship. Can authentic worship happen outside of the building and out of the clergy’s hands? Can the Holy Spirit fully inhabit Christian community across the digital divide? How can we make digital and/or distributed liturgies feel like worship?

With guests Lydia Bucklin, church planter and Canon to the Ordinary for Discipleship and Vitality in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan; and Randolph “Randy” Hollerith, Dean of Washington National Cathedral, and former rector of St. James’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va. REGISTER

International Development Mini-Grants: Due August 15

It's that time of year when the One World/One Church Commission of our Diocese invites congregations and/or members supported by their congregation to submit a grant with an international development focus or component. The funding for this comes from our diocesan budget and is at least 0.7% of the net disposable diocesan income. These have become known as the International Development Mini-Grants.

The grants received over the last 20 years have represented a diverse set of priorities seeking to end hunger, promote reconciliation and peace, and to provide assistance enabling people to live with a renewed sense of dignity and hope.

Applications are due August 15, 2020. If you have questions, please contact Suzanne Peterson or David Oakland

United Thank Offering Grants: Due for diocesan review by Aug. 3

The United Thank Offering will accept applications in two categories, Sustaining Ministries and Innovative Ministries, at two different funding levels through two granting cycles. The criteria for each category are different. Applicants must demonstrate concisely how the project directly supports the recovery effort.

Due to the extreme need in local communities, for this granting cycle, the UTO Board has established two levels of funding in order to help as many applicants as possible: Seed Funding ($0 to $10,000) and Impact Funding ($10,001 to $25,000). Additionally, the UTO Board recognizes that the needs of communities are dire now and will continue, therefore, there will be two grant cycles for 2021 within the focus area. The UTO Board will grant all Ingathering funds received by August 31, 2020 and awarded in October 2020, and the remaining Ingathering will be awarded in April 2021 through a second grant cycle.

Applications due to uto@iowaepiscopal.org by August 3, 2020 for consideration (Each diocese can submit two applications—one for seed-level funding and one for impact level funding).
